Forests are often referred to as oxygen producers or carbon sinks. Trees, however, play a crucial part in the water cycle too. They capture rainfall, use water from the soil and then release it into the atmosphere. However, different tree species may differ in their water management strategies and thus thrive in different climates or soil conditions.

Join us in the forest. And since we’re hydrologists, we’re going to talk about water. Over the course of a year, we will observe how spruces and beeches, the most abundant representatives of coniferous and deciduous trees in Czechia, behave. And what will we observe? Over the course of a year, you will learn how soil moisture changes at different depths, how much water is trapped on leaves or needles, how much evaporates, and how trees affect groundwater recharge.
